- Abstract
Venous disease is common in the Western world, with prevalence varying according to reporting methods. Partsch (2009) has suggested that in its mildest form, such as small telangiectasis (spider veins), global prevalence of venous disorders could be as high as 39%, and 14% for large varices. In the case of varicose veins, there could be an overall incidence of 13.5 per 1,000 persons (i.e. 1.35%), as reported in a Finnish study by Makivaara et al (2004). Early symptoms of venous disorders can be troublesome and painful. Moreover, they can develop into more serious conditions, often accompanied by chronic oedema and open ulceration. Compression is an essential part of treatment, with lifelong use of compression hosiery recommended to prevent recurrence. Challenges arise with concordance, ease of application, knowledge for clinical decision-making, training and service delivery of garments. This article reviews the evidence for the management of these conditions when compression hosiery is indicated.
