The Odyssey of Democracy in Pakistan: A Retrospective.
- Authors
SHAH, MOHSIN FAREED
- Abstract
This article explores the history of democracy in Pakistan and the challenges it has faced since gaining independence. The country has experienced periods of political turbulence and military dictatorships, which have hindered the development of a stable democracy. The military's interference in politics has suppressed political parties and fostered a brand of politics rooted in religion, ethnicity, and tribalism. Additionally, corruption, nepotism, and a lack of democratic values within society have further impeded the democratic process. The article suggests that addressing the nation's low literacy rate and strengthening civil bodies can contribute to the advancement of democracy in Pakistan.
