- Abstract
The article describes the cases of Shigella flexneri 2a resistance to ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin in South Carolina in October 2010. The disease occurred in a girl aged 2 years old, who experienced the diarrhea and was hospitalized due to seizure and fever, and her 6-year-old brother who was also hospitalized due to vomiting, bloody diarrhea and hyponatremia. They were treated sequentially with ceftriaxone, piperacillin/taxobactam, azithromycin and clarithromycin. Their father was also given piperacillin/taxobactam and azithromycin for 6 days.
