The article focuses on the deliberate destruction of props on the early modern English stage, examining how their destruction conveys meaning and blurs the boundary between representation and reality. Topics include the symbolic significance of prop destruction in plays; attempts to manage audience interpretation of the destruction; and the materiality of props as a site for exploring dramatic meaning; and engaging the audience in the performative experience.
