The article looks at the artist Charles Alston who painted "Midnight Vigil" presented on the cover of the issue. Alston's background including his childhood and education at Columbia University is presented. His roles as an educator and the first black supervisor of a Works Progress Administration Federal Arts Project are discussed. Alston's mural work involving African heritage and African American achievements in medicine is also discussed.
