- Abstract
The article focuses on the life of Dutch painter, Herman Kruyder (1881-1935), and discusses his 1926 painting "Dorpsstraat," or "Village Street." He was a patient in a psychiatric hospital in Amsterdam when he took his own life. The way he signed his name on "Dorpsstraat" suggests he wanted to conceal his identity. His modern artistic style was Expressionist with elements of Cubism and Fauvism. "Dorpsstraat" contains objects that are ambiguous and the central figure has no face. The author suggests that Kruyder painted a prophetic vision of the grim reaper and his own death.
