- Abstract
The article examines the proliferation of economic language in the study of sociology. The use of economic expressions such as cost benefit analysis, social capital, and price to describe sociological concepts such as friendship, freedom, and education is analyzed, the views of philosopher Michael J. Sandel on this use of language are discussed, and examples are offered of non-market and gift economies within families. Economic aspects of families, marriages, and division of family labor are described.
