- Abstract
A case of villous adenoma of the duodenum is reported, and the literature of the disease is reviewed. Physical and laboratory findings were negative except for anemia and positive occult blood. X-ray examination of the upper Gl tract revealed a transparent lesion in the third portion of the duodenum. Hypotonic duodenography and endoscopy confirmed the finding. Histological examination revealed a villous adenoma with proliferated gland cells and structual atypism. Villous adenoma is very rare in Japan. Up to now only two cases have been reported. The clinical manifestations are usually vague and nonspecific, and X-ray study is the most common method for diagnosis. Some villous adenomas have malignant potential. No definite conclusion regarding malignant change can be reached, but it is recommended that the tumor be resected, along with adjacent normal tissue, when malignancy is suspected.
