- Abstract
That Imām-ı Şāfi'ī defended hadīths against the Ahl al-Kalām who did not rely exactly on them is a matter which is prevalently known. In the second half of the second hijrī century, it is supposed that Şafi'ī defended the sunnah and hadith against the Ahl al-kalâm in his books which he wrote in Iraq and Egypt, scrutinizing and systematizing the fiqh understanding of the Hanafīs and Malikīs. On the other hand, he also defended hadīths not only against the Hanafīs but also against the Malikīs in his books that were written against them. Şafi'ī's criticisms for these two denominations which became movements before him indicate that he differs fundamentally from them in the sunnah and hadīth subjects. From this point of view, in this article, we felt obligation to analyze the Şafi'ī's criticisms for the Ahl al-kalām and Malikīs to determine who his real opposites are in the hadīth matter.
