- Abstract
The article presents a profile of the Presidency General Hospital in Calcutta, India where Doctor Ronald Ross worked and discovered the cause of malarial transmission and the subsequent understanding of the life cycle of Plasmodium, the parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. The history of the Presidency General Hospital, which was built in 1707 and also houses the National Research Institute, is detailed. The circumstances by which Ross proved his theory that the mosquito was both host and vector of malaria are recounted in detail.
