- Title
Malayalee Diaspora in the Age of Satellite Television.
- Authors
Subramanian, Shreerekha Pillai
- Abstract
The article discusses the increasing popularity of reality television programs in the Malayalee diaspora in Kerala, India. It argues that television programs such as "Idea Star Singer" (ISS) displace hard-won secular feminist standards of gender and the modern Indian woman. It proposes that the growth of reality television in Kerala depicts an example of an existing ideology which ends cultural memory, collective identity, and secular nationalism.
