The article presents a speech by university professor Jerry W. Ward, Jr. delivered at the "Ethnicity, Identity and Contemporary Literary Studies: A Global Perspective" Conference at Nanjing University in China on June 4, 2010, in which he discussed the need to gather empirical studies of cross-cultural readerships, such as those of African Americans, in order to capture a better description of globalizing dynamics in literature.
