This article addresses in detail passages from the Interlude in which modal categories are introduced and provides an analysis based on Kierkegaard's historical sources. In particular an interpretation of the relationship between the notions of a and a freely acting cause is proposed. The article also contains an argument to the effect that there are two triads of notions which correspond to each other: essence/necessity/ objects of knowledge and being/contingency/objects of belief.
