- Abstract
Jokes are outputs of oral culture tradition which have their own features regarding the form and content. There are different types of jokes in Turkish culture. Bektashi anecdotes have their unique place in Turkish oral culture tradition. This type of anecdotes represent a certain community, its understanding and behaviour. The Bektashi jokes which have been embraced by the whole community in the course of time put emphasis on tolerance as opposed to rigour. In the content of Bektashi anecdotes there are humour, derision, persuasion, criticism, warning and digging based on keen intelligence. Cleverness, slang and riposte have engendered vibrant humorous Bektashi anecdotes. Humour involving easy wording engen- ders laughing and lowers personal or interpersonal tension. Different theories have been developed to interpret the state of humorous laughing. These theories make emphasis on psychological functions of humour. Humour has cognitive, affective and social benefits, considering it from a psychological point of view. Humour is effective on the emotional results of stressful events. There is a strong association between sense of humour and its psychological function. In this study, personal and interpersonal mental health based on the context of humour and function of Bektashi anecdotes which are one of the unique components of Turkish oral culture tradition is explicated. In this context, associating Bektashi anecdotes with other types of humour at present, effects of humour in Bektashi anecdotes on mental health are discussed.
