- Abstract
Religous and historical figures have important roles in the tradition of the Ottoman poetry. The poets made use of the richness of the meanings which the history and tradition gave to these figures while they were constructing the skeleton of their poems. Undoubtedly, one of these figures is Saint Ali. As one of Saint Prophet's cousins, son-in-law and one of the caliphs (successors), Saint Ali holds an important position in Muslim world with his outstanding personality, bravery, courage, wisdom, manners, generosity and with such positive characteristics. His characteristics were used in Ottoman poetry and Sufi literature for various reasons, and numerous eulogies as well as the naat-type poetries have been composed for His sake. Moreover, Saint Ali has a special place in qasidas. Sometimes, He is mentioned as an attribution factor to describe the person praised by the poet and sometimes His superior characteristics are put down in words within poems. In both cases, Saint Ali has been a resource for many poems with his dedicated appellations and the monikers provided to Him by the history and the tradition. Besides, he provides an inspiration for the poets. In this study, Saint Ali's place in the qasida tradition of the Ottoman poetry has been determined. Additionally, how and in which manner the Ottoman poets described Him has been presented.
