- Abstract
The Tocapu symbol system is one of the most spectacular of the Central Andes and has provided a great interpretative challenge. Since John H. Rowe's ground-breaking typology of Inca tunics and his innovative interpretation of Tocapus (1979), much progress in understanding the meaning and function of this unique symbol system has been accomplished. However, it remains a graphic system that is difficult to classify according to traditional definitions of writing. This is further complicated by the observation of some scholars that several Tocapus have a non- Inca origin. This article will present some case studies of "Ancestor Tocapus" of objects in the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin that show the process of incorporating past elements into the Inca Tocapu system. The focus is on how such elements were incorporated into the new context and the shift of meaning that accompanied them. This study is based on a research project conducted in 2009-2012 funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
