BENTHAM'S "PLACE AND TIME.".
- Authors
ENGELMANN, Stephen G.; PITTS, Jennifer
- Abstract
The article considers the history of Jeremy Bentham’s 1782 essay on “Place and Time,” using it as an example of revisionist views on Bentham, his writings, and his impact on philosophy and intellectual history. It discusses the fact that many of Bentham's writings were edited posthumously by others, political writer Étienne Dumont of Geneva, Switzerland being notable for translating and editing Bentham's writings into French. Versions of the essay were published as the 1802 "De l’influence des tem[p]s et des lieux en matière de législation” edited by Dumont; the 1838-1843 “Of the Influence of Time and Place in Matters of Legislation” edited by Richard Smith; and the 2011 “Place and Time,” edited by Philip Schofield and Stephen G. Engelmann.
