- Abstract
This article is divided in two parts. I start by offering some background information about discussions and debates that took place in Europe in the late Middle Ages and early Modern times involving political and ecclesiastical authorities. I do not intend to be exhaustive in this presentation, but I only seek to suggest the broader context of the disputes between the power of the European monarchs and that of the Catholic Church during the 15th, 16th and early 17th centuries. In the second part I deal specifically with the work of Alonso de la Vera Cruz and I use the first part as the background against which Alonso's thought can be understood. I will mainly seek to emphasize the role played by the Politics of Aristotle in Alonso's conception of marriage in New Spain.
