Service as Mastery in The Alchemist.
- Authors
ALWES, DEREK B.
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the play "The Alchemy," by Ben Jonson is presented. It argues that the character of Face closely resembles the characteristics of Jonson and this has led many readers to feel that Jonson may be antitheatrical despite his close association with actors and playwrights. The author also mentions critic Thomas Greene's observation about Jonson's "centered self" in his works. He also suggests that the object of satire in the play are the gulls and not the rogues.
