- Title
Jonson's Satiric-Comedy and the Unsnarling of the Satyr from the Satirist.
- Authors
Fletcher, Angus
- Abstract
The article discusses the Roman satire from Greek comedy. It is stated that the concept was first disentangled by early modern scholar Isaac Casaubon. Casaubon's 1605 "De Satryrica Graecorum Poesi et Romanorum Satira" traced the different etymologies of satura and saturos. He demonstrated that the satire bore no relation to the satyr plays from early tragedy and argued that there were similarities between old comedy and satire.
