- Abstract
The article reports on the current status and possible future scenarios in the Italian and European goldsmith industry. The economic crisis throughout Europe has affected the growing number of jewelry companies at risk. Problems such as unemployment and the erosion of salaries have made the purchasing power of the middle classes precarious. The four main players in the gem and jewelry industry in Europe have mixed prospects for the future. Historic jewelry brands can be expected to maintain a sizable market share. Emerging steel and silver brands have built on the emotion and symbolism of their product aiming at the youth market. Fashion companies have entered the jewelry market in order to deliver a total look. Small artisanal companies are characterized by high-quality craftsmanship.
