The article presents an examination into the history of the 1819 proto-bicycle invention known as a velocipede, discussing how it was debated over in popular culture and journalism in early 19th century England. Details are given outlining how critics considered the device irrelevant and supporters saw it as a device with social implications. The social stereotypes of dandies and Cockneys, typically associated with the invention, are further addressed within this debate.
