- Abstract
Narrowing of the cervico-axillar canal by costoclavicular compression, as well as by cervical ribs, is a potential danger to the circulation of hand and fingers because of the possibility of microembolic showers. Lesser impairment of finger circulation, for instance the occlusion of one digital artery, may give rise to ischemic attacks or asphyxia manus et digitorum, which are to be distinguished from the Raynaud's phenomenon. Progressive impairment of finger circulation and the occlusion of both digital arteries give rise to an ischemic stage in the finger, so called digitus moriens or dying digit. This condition does not manifest itself in attacks, but in a permanent blueish painful discoloration of one or more fingers. It too must be distinguished from the Raynaud's phenomenon. In assessing the ischaemic stage, angiography of hand and fingers may be helpful, but its reliability depends the quality of the angiographic procedure.
