- Authors
Schäffner, Raimund
- Abstract
Comrade Jacob (1961) deals with the history and ideas of the Diggers, a mid-seventeenth century group of subversive radicals. In this historical novel, David Caute sheds light on the confrontation between social-revolutionary forces, emergent capitalism and the political and military elite, pointing out the universal validity and the topical relevance of the Diggers' theory and practice for subsequent social-emancipatory movements. This article closely examines Caute's novel, situating it in the context of the controversial debate among historians about the historical and ideological assessment of the Diggers and their spokesman Gerrard Winstanley. Finally, it draws a comparison with Kevin Brownlow's film Winstanley (1975), which addresses the same topic from a different ideological perspective and with a different thematic focus.
