The Puzzle of Religion and Violence.

- Abstract
Perhaps the only thing more puzzling than senseless violence is violence that is carried out in the name of high ideals. The role of religion is a particularly difficult part of this puzzle. This article introduces a series of articles, published in the periodical "The Hedgehog Review," which make readers see the complexity of the relationship between religion and violence. Rene Girard argues that the scared texts of Judaism and Christianity narrate violence from the perspective of the victim. Mark Juergensmeyer suggests that we have conditions where individuals find motivation to commit extreme acts of violence, seeing those acts, and the rewards that will come from them, on a cosmic scale. Other articles are written by William Cavanaugh, Khaled Abou El Fadl, and Slavica Jakelic.
