- Abstract
Between 1970 and 1975 the state of New Jersey required unemployment insurance claimants to register with the state employment service. Registration was not required between 1975 and 1980. This paper reports three tests of the effect of the registration requirement upon unemployment insurance costs. The data suggest that mandatory registration increases the probability and/or speed of re-employment and thus substantially reduces unemployment insurance costs.
