- Abstract
Typophorus nigritus F., (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), commonly known among sweet potato (Ipomoeas batatas (L.) Lam.) growers as the black beetle is a widespread pest throughout the country. Their larvae open galleries and holes in tuberous roots to decrease commercial values at harvest time. In order to know the scope and significance of the pest, a diagnosis was carried out in all provinces covering a total of 120 municipalities of the 159 dedicated to this crop. Within the main results, damages caused by the pest were reported by growers from 109 municipalities, representing 90,83% among the sampled municipalities. The average percentage of affected tuberous roots in the country was 21,35%, representing 42,07% of the total area in comparison to the planted area. Damages were higher in brown soils and during summer season. 97.24% of the interviewed growers said that sweet potato production looses commercial value and only 20,18% knew the pest causal agent. Training was recommended to sweet potato growers in relation to this problem, as well as, to value the economic damages caused by this insect at national level.
