The Gnädiges Fräulein: Tennessee Williams's Southernmost Belle.
- Authors
Quinlan, Stefanie
- Abstract
The article examines the style used by Tennessee Williams in writing the drama "The Gnädiges Fräulein." The playwright presents an allegory on southern women, an abstracted character who symbolizes his idea of a failed woman. He uses a coded name that audiences will not readily understand the implications on her fate. The attraction of the women to the male authority, Indian Joe exemplifies the ability of man to exhibit animal behavior.
