- Abstract
The population of Slovakia has undergone significant changes in the character of demographic reproduction since the end of the 19th century. The main signs were a decline in fertility and mortality and the onset of population aging. These changes, which were designated demographic transitions, did not occur in the entire population at once and throughout the territory. The aim of the paper is to identify possible spatial differences in the level of conscious limitation of the number of children and the course of this process in time with emphasis on the period of the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century through selected tools of historical demography (Coale's indices and Coale-Trussell model). The obtained results confirmed relatively significant differences in the index of marital fertility, as well as the gradual deepening of the conscious reduction of marital fertility, especially after the First World War.
