The article offers information on the history, purpose and significance of the application of the guardian ad litem (GAL) doctrine in private child custody cases in Maine state. It offers recommendations to improve the legitimacy and efficacy of guardian ad litem [GAL] appointments to serve the serve the best interests of children. It also analyzes the decision of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in case of King v. Robinson regarding guardian ad litem [GAL] appointments.
