- Abstract
Poplar plantations and stands cover forest wet habitats all over the Danube and its main tributaries in Romania. White poplar (Populus alba) is propagated mainly by seeds, its vegetative regeneration having not good and constant results. The catkins were harvest just before complete maturation (and dissemination) from natural stands - periodically flooded galleries of European poplar and white willow on lower Danube (Măcin Forest District, Dobrogea Region). Taphrina rhizophora is a primary parasite of white poplar fructification (capsules developed on female catkins), which is rarely mentioned in forest protection recordings all over its host range. This is the first identification of T. rhizophora in Romania. Disease frequency was very high in selected forest, almost all the catkins being affected. Infection intensity was severe producing important seed lost.
