- Abstract
During the 19th century, the satirical press was configured in a parallel way to daily newspapers, creating complementary stories with the added value of comedy. El Mosquito. Periódico satírico-burlesco (1863-1893) is considered the most important among them, remembered for its intervention in the political debate and its incisive caricatures. However, a different reading is possible, one that highlights that the publication was more than political satire. In this article, we will review and analyze a series of written and graphic interventions published in the paper around 1870, referring to other facets of Buenos Aires' public life such as the sociability of leisure, free time and consumption. We affirm here that, although the mark of illustrator and editor Henri Stein is undeniable, the contextual influence of an emerging and changing editorial press market press was also key to explain the publication's experimentation in format and themes, all in order to remain current at the end of its first decade. Furthermore, we conclude that this period of experimentation, of trial and error, was instrumental in the subsequent innovations in the field of graphic advertising that distinguished the publication among its peers.
