- Title
Free Black Residency in Two Antebellum Virginia Counties: How the Laws Functioned.
- Authors
ESLINGER, ELLEN
- Abstract
The article discusses the laws restricting the civil liberties of free black residents in Rockbridge County and Augusta County, adjoining counties in a rural area of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, from 1800 to 1860. Topics include laws requiring the registration of free blacks, the usability of historical records from the counties, and the occupations of free blacks in the counties. It is said that evidence on the enforcement of laws related to free blacks from jail records and court records is inconclusive.
