- Title
Invasion of the Everygirl: Seventeen Magazine, 'Traumarama!' and the Girl Writer.
- Authors
MOORE, CARLEY; Moore, Carley
- Abstract
The article discusses the book "Traumarauma!" and the column of the same name which appears in the girls' periodical "Seventeen". Particular focus is given to themes of shame, bodily control, and solidarity in the reader submissions printed in the column and the book. According to the author, the stories are heavily edited by the magazine, which seeks to exploit girls' insecurities for the benefit of its advertisers. It is suggested that the behavioral etiquette prescribed in the stories and the punishments their subjects receive for their imperfections convey the message that all imperfections are always unacceptable. Details related to the history of the magazine are presented. Other topics include girls' relationship with boys, social norms, and the middle class.
