- Authors
SHEEHAN, STEVEN T.
- Abstract
The author discusses the popularity and other social aspects of the television program "The Honeymooners." The author reflects on the embodiment of working-class masculinity in the character of Ralph Kramden played by actor Jackie Gleason and postwar ideals in U.S. society of production, consumerism, and consumer pleasures. It is suggested that "The Honeymooners" emphasized the burdens of material obligations and participation in consumer culture. Other topics include publicity surrounding Gleason, marital tensions on television, and the threat of domestic violence.
