- Abstract
Combining the sixth round of the Business Environment Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS VI) with three waves of the COVID-19 Follow-up Survey, we explore the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on firm performance in North Macedonia. Results show that small, female led and firms which consider access to finance an obstacle to business operations were hit the hardest by the pandemic, whereas certified, older and firms with an online presence performed better during the pandemic. Further analyses reveal that the main channels through which these effects materialize are access to government support, the adoption of digital technologies and access to loans from commercial banks to finance liquidity shortages. Policy implications are given to limit the negative impact of the pandemic and facilitate the post-pandemic economic recovery.
