- Abstract
I respond to the article of Theo Kölzer in the last volume of this journal, where he criticized my text „Abt Castus von Visbek" (2021): „ . . . the author's argumentation turns out to be a conglomerate of mere hypotheses. . . . Based on a complete falsification of the late 10 th century (D LdF. 198), Visbek as a missionary centre and the prominent role of its abbot must be considered as phantasms" (p. 15). I'm repeating the main results of my article and stress the methodical implications: (1) The nominating of basilic(ae) belonging to Visbek in the diploma of Louis the German (855) is not only formal, but correspondents to the tithes registered in the early 11 th century. (2) Three times a Castus or Gerbert-Castus is named in the sources of the monastery of Werden in the 9 th century; it's shown that he was the same person. (3) Possessions of Wildeshausen (872), Werden, Visbek and Enger (947) are close in many villages of one pagus, the Lerigau: the greater family of the Saxon rebel Widukind must have owned them. (4) In the 10 th century the forger couldn't invent an abba Castus: in Visbek and Corvey they must have known that a Castus founded and vested the little monastery; he also was remembered as the first abbot there. (5) As to the „newly developed perspectives and chronology concerning the missionary endeavors in Saxony" (ibid.), I only said and say that Visbek with it's clerics and six parish churches was involved in missionary activities already in the first half of the 9 th century. With the examples of Münster and Paderborn, I demonstrate that both were determined as bishop's seats already in the last decade of the 8 th century.
