- Abstract
Clothes Albums that present samples from the state, palace, military and social constitution of the Ottoman Empire have a distinctive place within the Ottoman painting art. They have documentative characteristics. As the albums include commentaries in foreign language they may be considered as today's fashion photographs. Figures were drawn with their specific clothings. In other words the paintings reflect the figures that formed the Ottoman political and social constitution. Without a doubt the albums were arranged for the ones who wished either to know or present the Ottoman society with every details. Almost most of the albums are abroad. But the one in Ankara Etnografya Museum with the number 8283 has a very rich content with 256 paintings. It is a precious cultural document with it's detailed painting language and high quality. The paintings show the clothings of men and women of the age with the tiny details. On the other hand the paintings of the street sellers, street sweeper and employees show the daily life of the Ottoman society. As the only background of the paintings were made of just one color stain --as well as the shadows of the figures- the aim of the paintings must have been made to show the clothings of the figures.
