- Abstract
Ineffective deglutition, as occurs in superior gastrointestinal tract malformations (esophageal or duodenal atresia), may impair intestinal reabsorption of fluid, leading to polyhydramnios. The authors postulated that the gastrointestinal tract malformation hampered amniotic fluid reabsorption, possibly compensating for the lack of fetal urine production. Sirenomelia is a rare and lethal congenital malformation in which the lower limbs are replaced by a single fused limb in the midline.
