- Abstract
The article focuses on the renovation of the Guoqiang Cai Courtyard House in Beijing, China. It outlines the challenges faced by the architects and engineers who are in-charged of the renovation project due to its location and neighbourhood which are made of hutongs. It recalls the history of siheyuan during the Han dynasty which served as an inspiration to the development of the Guoqiang Cai Courtyard and relates that most of the siheyuan in modern times were used as mass housing complexes. It details how the courtyard was restored and reveals several additions to the building which now represents a regenerated hutong neighbourhoods.
