- Abstract
The article presents a study on the age, body size and body condition of adult Giant Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) during spawning events at peri-urban breeding sites in Gateng Province, South Africa. The study involves the use of an electronic balance and steel tape-measure to measure body-mass and snout-vent length (SVL), and a sterilized bone cutter or wire clipper was used to gather toe clips which were used to analyze animal body size in relation to age. The results reveal no significant difference in the lines of arrested growth (LAG) counts among same-sex animals. The study suggests that male P. adspersus may live for 20 or more years in the wild, but adult life expectancy is decreasing at some peri-urban breeding sites.
