- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between modern consumption and entertainment by analysing two phenomena. On the one hand the emergence of department stores as new places of sociability and on the other, these stores as part of the construction of the consumer's identity. The articulation between these two phenomena, which began in 19th century Europe, points out an intense relationship between consumption, its representations and practices and the experience of diversion, entertainment and sociability.
