- Abstract
The article discusses economic and political problems in Mexico in the 20th and early 21st centuries. The author examines the impact of what he calls the poor economic performance, dysfunctional political institutions, and violence associated with drugs on citizens' perceptions of democracy in Mexico. Topics include the war on drugs, the Mexican presidential election of 2012, and the actions of political parties including the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), National Action Party (PAN), and Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). Also discussed are the country's legislative processes, the attitudes of voters, and the administrations of former President Vicente Fox and Mexican President Felipe Calderón.
