The authors discuss aspects of the importance of surgery in all health care systems. They examine the quality of medical care services based on the volume and availability of surgical care in low-income countries such as sub-Saharan Africa along with the shortage of doctors. The authors cite the lack of human resources, infrastructure and facilities for surgical services in low-income countries.
