- Abstract
In India, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the accepted policy decision for pest management since 1985. Beginning 1993 IPM activities were intensified in India and since then many agencies have implemented IPM programmes in rice, cotton, vegetables, oilseeds and other crops. IPM programmes for educating farmers have not been able to achieve long-term impact in greater adoption of non-pesticide pest management practices and reducing pesticide use in Indian agriculture. There is paucity of empirical data available about wider adoption of non-pesticide IPM practices and resultant reduction in pesticide use at farm level. Between 1993-94 and 2006-07, on an average pesticide use had a negative growth rate of 2.9% year-on-year basis. Since then the pesticide sales regained an upward trajectory, and on an average pesticide use in agriculture has increased by 3.2% annually. Thus, IPM programmes have not achieved the primary quantifiable objective in reducing pesticide use in Indian agriculture.
