- Abstract
In Turkey, academic historians are not generally interested in letters written by ordinary people. This is due not only to the characteristics of Turkish historiography, but also to some extent to the negligence of such material by archivists. Despite some exceptions in last few years, letters still cannot find a place on the desk of historian. Keeping this in mind, the present article discusses how letters can be used as a source for the history of emotions as well as cultural and social history by looking into various examples of the urban experience belonging to the city dwellers of Ankara in the 1950s. It also argues that the employment of such individual letters as merely simple texts would be disregarding the potential they hold for historians. In order to prove this point, the article focuses on the emotions of three couples by examining the letters they exchanged in the 1940s and 1950s. Through this unique source of information, the article shows how each of these couples built their relationships step by step and how they affected each other in their most important decisions. It also draws attention to the striking parallels between their personal desires as members of the first generation of modern Turkey and their perception of the city itself.
