- Title
Franz Boas: The emergence of the anthropologist.
- Authors
Little, Michael A.
- Abstract
Rosemary Lévy Zumwalt has written a biography of this founder of American anthropology during the 19th century, which were the formative years leading up to his appointment to the faculty at Columbia College/University in 1899. Zumwalt's biography is among the best that has been written about this giant figure: it is a superior work in its scholarship and writing, and rivals another biography on Boas covering roughly the same period published posthumously by Cole (1999). Zumwalt's book provides many details about Boas's life that build on Cole's work, particularly since she has drawn on a rich source: Boas's correspondence to members of his family, much of which was written originally in German.
