- Title
Greenland in the U.S. Polar Strategy.
- Authors
Petersen, Nikolaj
- Abstract
The article discusses the policy of the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Greenland during the Cold War. The article examines the construction of an air force base near Thule, Greenland, and the so-called airborne alert program that constituted the operational polar strategy of the U.S. government concerning the Soviet Union. The article discusses the daily operations of the base in the 1950s and 1960s and how those activities reflected the role of what the author identifies as the deterrence policy of the U.S. regarding potential nuclear war with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
