- Abstract
The paper analyzes, from sociological point of view, the family relations and in particular the condition of the female characters have in the traditional Bulgarian mentality, the clash between the patriarchal status and the modernization tendencies. Social representations are the narrative support in the realistic and naturalistic prose, so the literature often receives a documentary value. Kliment Tzachev's novel, A House like Any Other is structured around family relationships - the families Cherkezov, Hubchev and Otashliiski, and those of their adult children -, families that harmonize differently, according to the degree of morality in relation with others, but have as a common point the way they look at the woman as a secondary element, who must completely obey the man's wishes, an extension of the tradition in modernity, a strong oriental reminiscence after a long Ottoman domination. The desire of independence is perceived as rebellion or, at best, an unfortunate moment of confusion. While men are identify themselves exclusively with profession, the family being an acceptable background for them to the extent that they provide total emotional comfort, women are only allowed to identify themselves with family needs
