The article discusses the aesthetics of the sublime in the satirical book "Jonathan Wild" by Henry Fielding and compares them with a seminar by Jacques Derrida. Fielding's description of the killing of an "elephantine" animal is scrutinized along with the reaction of the character Mrs. Heartfree to the spectacle of its demise.
